‘Ozil is a wasted talent’ – Petit

first_imgMesut Ozil is a “wasted talent” who has lost his psychological edge, according to former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit.Ex-Germany international Ozil has not played a minute of football for the Gunners in 2019, making his last appearance in the 1-1 draw at Brighton on Boxing Day.Unai Emery has repeatedly insisted he has confidence in the playmaker, despite leaving him out of some games for “tactical reasons”, and last week the Spaniard shrugged off speculation linking the 30-year-old, who is contracted until 2021, with a move away from Emirates Stadium. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Man Utd ready to spend big on Sancho and Haaland in January Who is Marcus Thuram? Lilian’s son who is top of the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach Brazil, beware! Messi and Argentina out for revenge after Copa controversy Best player in MLS? Zlatan wasn’t even the best player in LA! But Petit, who won the double of Premier League and FA Cup with Arsenal in 1997-98, was less forgiving in his assessment of a player who arrived from Real Madrid for a fee believed to be in excess of £40 million ($52m) in 2013.”It is very frustrating. I cannot remember the last time he was an artist on the pitch; now when he asks questions we already know the answers,” Petit told the Daily Mail.”He is a wasted talent, he has a terrible psychological problem.”In 2002, when the French team went out [of the World Cup] as champions, it was shameful, not just that we lost it but the way we lost it. It is the same with Germany in 2018. Ozil was seen as one of the most responsible for that because of his body language on the pitch.”But it was already the case for Ozil for the last two years for Arsenal – one great game, four average. Mentally he is not there anymore.”Physically he is in good shape, he has talent, we all know his quality, but if you cannot work your brain to be the beautiful player we know you can be, it’s over. “If I was Ozil, when you have won so many things – the World Cup – it’s human that if you are not starting, you stop working, you do not have any targets any more. I can understand that, I was the same at the end of my career, but for me I had a lot of injuries that could have stopped me.”He has the luxury to still be in shape, to be appreciated by his club, he signed a new contract, they gave him what he wanted. The least he could do is pay back that confidence.” Check out Goal’s Premier League 2019-20 fantasy football podcast for game tips, debate and rivalries.last_img read more

Chelsea may reunite Danny Drinkwater and N’Golo Kanté for United game

first_img How Chelsea fell from champions to a rabble at Roma in less than six months Share on Facebook Share on Messenger Antonio Conte revives his Italian crisis management to stop rot at Chelsea “Honestly, we spoke about the Bournemouth game and then the first game against Rome,” he said of Sunday’s conversation with the owner. “My relationship with Mr Abramovich is the same as last season, and I don’t see a difference between this season and last [in that respect]. My only concern is to put everything into the job so that, when I finish my workand go home, I’m satisfied with what I’ve done.” Read more Share on Twitter Reuse this content Chelsea Share on WhatsApp Antonio Conte is considering reuniting the midfield partnership that helped inspire Leicester City’s improbable Premier League triumph two seasons ago after pairing Danny Drinkwater and N’Golo Kanté in training before Sunday’s visit of Manchester United. The Chelsea head coach, who is seeking an immediate positive response after his side were thrashed by Roma in midweek, has been denied the opportunity to field both players together this season because of injury. Drinkwater succumbed early to a calf complaint from which he has only just recovered, and has yet to start a Premier League game since his £35m move in August. Kanté has been absent since damaging a hamstring in France’s World Cup qualifying victory over Bulgaria last month. Share on LinkedIn Antonio Conte Share via Email The Frenchman has been back in full training for more than a week and might have featured at the Stadio Olimpico, only to indicate he did not feel ready. The club’s medical staff will check on Kanté before kick-off but the 26-year-old is expected to line up against United and has worked alongside Drinkwater in training. The last time that pair, so instrumental in Leicester’s startling success, played together was on the final day of the 2015-16 season when Drinkwater scored in a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge. “N’Golo is progressing well,” said Conte, aware that Tiémoué Bakayoko has been hampered of late by a groin injury. “We have also Saturday and then I’ll take the best decision for N’Golo and for the team. But we are talking about an important player.”Conte revealed that Roman Abramovich watched training last Sunday in the wake of the 1-0 win at Bournemouth, with the owner having been at Cobham this week. The champions are nine points off Manchester City in the league, albeit still in fourth place, and the humiliation at Roma prompted the head coach to question, both publicly and privately, his players’ commitment and hunger to defend their title. He has since claimed the team’s malaise will demonstrate whether the players “are winners or losers”. Topics Read more news Share on Pinterestlast_img read more

9 Fresh IPAs to Sip Right Now

first_img The Best Fresh Hop Beers to Celebrate the Hop Harvest Without IPAs, the modern craft beer industry would look a whole lot different. The India Pale Ale style has evolved numerous times since the dawn of the craft era, and most expressions no longer come close to resembling the original, meant-for-long-sea-journeys-because-water-would-kill-you English-style IPA. And since IPAs are essentially the opposite of macro lagers, in part driving the growth of the industry, it’s understandable that IPA is nearly synonymous with craft beer for non-craft beer drinkers. With more than 6,000 breweries in the U.S. and almost everyone taking at a crack at the IPA, there’s no way any one drinker can try them all, but there are a few worth tracking down and trying. The Manual’s last list of IPAs to sip right now included Other Half, Tree House, Russian River, Revision and Offshoot. With the insane amount of IPAs on the market, we decided to expand the reach a little bit, including some new, some old, but altogether incredible IPAs available. There’s a load of hyped IPAs on the market that are worthy of being on this list, but a good balance of old and new is ideal. Sometimes it’s important to return to appreciate those IPAs that helped set the stage for the beers that dominate the hype today. Here are some of the best IPAs to drink right now. (And we mean right now; remember to drink IPAs as fresh as possible.)Two Hearted IPABell’s BreweryNowadays, the IPA category is giant; 30 years ago, the American IPA was still a novelty. Few have been able to define the subcategories of the style like Bell’s Two Hearted, but the Midwest has its own special balanced IPA style in part because of Kalamazoo, Michigan’s Bell’s Brewery. Any Michigander lets out a sigh of relief when they’re out of state and see Two Hearted on a beer menu. Two Hearted has been a gateway beer, despite its relative extreme stature compared to light lagers, for many beer lovers. The beer must be special when it’s continuously named to the top of the Best Beers in America list by America’s homebrewers. Mind HazeFirestone Walker Brewing CompanyFirestone Walker continues to make some of the best beers in America and despite its growing size, still manages to put out new beers that are worth picking up. Luponic Distortion has been one of the best series of beers exploring what hops can do, and now Firestone has jumped into the haze game.  With Mind Haze, Firestone brewer Matt Brynildson went to Germany instead of New England for the haziness. To get the haze and creaminess, Firestone uses wheat and oats, like the classic German weizenbock.LunchMaine Beer CompanyIs there anything better than a beer named after a meal? Not a whole lot if there is. It helps Maine Beer Co. makes really tasty beer normally, but Lunch has made waves across America, even though it’s not super widely distributed. The incredibly clean labels are attractive no matter your aesthetic preferences, which is awesome. Diving into the beer, the Amarillo, Centennial, and Simcoe hops contribute an awesome mixture of fruit and pine flavors with a great malt backbone. Dinner isn’t too bad, either. Head HunterFat Head’s BreweryLike with Bell’s Two Hearted, Midwestern beers can be overlooked when the coasts are busy defining beer styles. Cleveland’s Fat Head’s Brewery is one of the nation’s best IPA brewers and keeps churning out gems. It’s crazy when possibly one of the nation’s best “West Coast” IPAs is brewed east of the Mississippi, but it’s hard to dispute Head Hunter’s beauty. Hop JuJu is also an amazing Imperial IPA, if you happen to be around Ohio when it’s released.Resilience Butte County Proud IPASierra Nevada Brewing CompanySierra Nevada introduced the idea of hop-forward beers to plenty of Americans, and now the nation is helping support Sierra Nevada’s home of Chico, California. More than 1,400 breweries in the U.S. partnered to brew the Resilience Butte County Proud IPA to help the Camp Fire relief efforts. The massive wildfire this fall destroyed nearly 19,000 homes and killed at least 86 people. The beer project is projected to bring in more than $10 million with most of it going to support the Butte Strong Fund, a collaboration of Sierra Nevada, North Valley Community Foundation, and Aaron Rodgers’ NorCal Fire Recovery Fund. The beers have largely been released now across the nation, so if you see one drink up for a good cause. You can read more about Resilience here.Baykeeper IPAAnchor Brewing CompanyAnchor has been a pioneer in so many ways to the modern beer industry, even setting the path of the modern American IPA back in the 1970s with Liberty Ale. While the company can get lost in the shuffle of the beer world now, they’re not resting at all, continually putting out the amazing core beers that built the company — and in part the industry— and releasing new beers regularly now. This month the brewery released Baykeeper IPA to celebrate a local nonprofit, Baykeeper. The new 7-percent alcohol by volume IPA is slightly hazy, capturing the current industry trend, but also reminiscent of the San Francisco Bay. Made with Mosaic, Cascade, and Amarillo Cryo hops, Baykeeper is filled with fruit and pine notes, but is also a touch spicy and sweet without much bitterness. Le JusAlarmist BrewingChicago’s Alarmist Brewing lands on the list because it shook the beer world in September. Le Jus topped the Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale category at the Great American Beer Festival. Sure, that’s probably in large part because the category’s fatherland of New England largely abstains from the competition, but to top the ginormous category still takes some serious skill. Made with Mosaic and Citra hops, the beer also has a touch of lactose to bring a bit of smooth creaminess to the beer.Space Camper IPABoulevard Brewing CompanyIn a world where IPAs keep coming fast at a consumer, a good beer goes a long way, but so does a cool hook. Boulevard Brewing recently released its newest IPA, Space Camper, but with it came a video game. Boulevard built an 8-bit video game in the same vein as Space Invaders and Galaga for fans to play — and win prizes. The company also pledged to the Arbor Day Foundation to 10,000 trees in 2019, to support “the only planet with beer.” It helps the beer is solid, too. At 5.9 percent ABV, Space Camper is loaded with citrus, stone fruit, and watermelon notes from its mix of Ekuanot, El Dorado, and Galaxy hops.TropicáliaCreature Comforts Brewing CompanyThe southeast isn’t historically — in the beer sense — significant (yet). But just as soon as it seems the region was going to be left behind in the beer movement, a surge of excellent hop-forward beers swarmed out of Georgia and Florida, like Tropicália from Creature Comforts. When you grab the refreshingly-designed can, it could be mistaken for a container of orange juice, and the citrus notes of the beer to wash over the tongue much like a delicious glass of OJ.Article originally published April 28, 2018. Snake charmers flute comes to the aid of preemies

first_imgScientists have composed new music on the Indian snake charmer’s flute that can help boost brain development of premature infants in intensive care. While advances in neonatal medicine now extremely premature babies a good chance of survival, these children remain at high risk of developing neuropsychological disorders. To help the brains of these fragile newborns develop as well as possible despite the stressful environment of intensive care, researchers at the University of Geneva (UNIGE) and the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG) in Switzerland created music written especially for them. Also Read – Pollution makes you more aggressiveThe research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) in the US, shows that the neural networks of premature infants who have listened to this music, and in particular a network involved in many sensory and cognitive functions, are developing much better. “At birth, these babies’ brains are still immature. Brain development must therefore continue in the intensive care unit, in an incubator, under very different conditions than if they were still in their mother’s womb,” said Petra Huppi, a professor at the UNIGE, who directed this work. Also Read – Physical therapy better for low back pain”Brain immaturity, combined with a disturbing sensory environment, explains why neural networks do not develop normally,” Huppi said. The researchers hypothesised that since the neural deficits of premature babies are due, at least in part, to unexpected and stressful stimuli as well as to a lack of stimuli adapted to their condition, their environment should be enriched by introducing pleasant and structuring stimuli. As the hearing system is functional early on, music appeared to be a good candidate, researchers said. “Luckily, we met the composer Andreas Vollenweider, who had already conducted musical projects with fragile populations and who showed great interest in creating music suitable for premature children,” said Huppi. “We wanted to structure the day with pleasant stimuli at appropriate times: a music to accompany their awakening, a music to accompany their falling asleep, and a music to interact during the awakening phases,” said Lara Lordier, a researcher at the HUG and UNIGE, unfolds the musical creation process. To choose instruments suitable for these very young patients, Andreas Vollenweider played many kinds of instruments to the babies, in the presence of a nurse specialised in developmental support care. “The instrument that generated the most reactions was the Indian snake charmers’ flute (the punji),” said Lordier. “Very agitated children calmed down almost instantly, their attention was drawn to the music,” she said. The composer thus wrote three sound environments of eight minutes each, with punji, harp and bells pieces. The study was conducted with a group of premature infants who listened to the music, a control group of premature infants, and a control group of full-term newborns. Researchers wanted to assess whether the brain development of premature infants who had listened to the music would be more similar to that of full-term babies. Scientists used functional MRI at rest on all three groups of children. Without music, premature babies generally had poorer functional connectivity between brain areas than full-term babies, confirming the negative effect of prematurity. “The most affected network is the salience network which detects information and evaluates its relevance at a specific time, and then makes the link with the other brain networks that must act,” said Lordier. “This network is essential, both for learning and performing cognitive tasks as well as in social relationships or emotional management,” she said. The first children enrolled in the project are now six years old, at which age cognitive problems begin to be detectable. Scientists will now meet again their young patients to conduct a full cognitive and socio-emotional assessment and observe whether the positive outcomes measured in their first weeks of life have been sustained.last_img read more

Greater push needed to ensure womens rights says UN expert

12 October 2010With one in three women around the world being beaten, coerced into sex or abused, more must be done to ensure the human rights of women, a member of the United Nations expert body monitoring compliance with the international pact on eliminating discrimination against women said today. “Significant progress has been achieved with respect to women’s human rights but we know that much more needs to be done throughout the whole world,” Zou Xiaoqiau, the vice chair of the 23-member UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women, told reporters in New York. She expressed alarm over the fact that violence against women is prevalent in many parts of the world, pointing out that the scourge is on the rise.Characterizing the statistics as “frightening,” Ms. Zou noted that many rapes go unreported due to stigma and trauma, with charges being dropped against a rapist in some countries if he marries his victim. In addition, some 2 million girls between the ages of five and 15 are introduced into the commercial sex market annually, and forced or unprotected sex puts women at risk of acquiring HIV, AIDS and other sexually-transmitted diseases.Ms. Zou, who presented the report of the Committee to the General Assembly yesterday, also spoke out against communally-sanctioned violence, such as honour killings, which claim the lives of thousands of young women every year. The Committee regularly reviews each country once it becomes a party to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). Currently, 186 countries have accepted the Convention, which was adopted in 1979.“The Committee is committed to combating and ending discrimination and violence against women in all its forms,” Ms. Zou stressed, appealing to the States parties to fulfil their obligations under the pact and adopt its additional protocols to “ensure that women are treated with the dignity and respect that they deserve and demand as human beings.”She also welcomed the creation of UN Women, or the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, which merges four UN entities: the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), the Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW), the Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues, and the UN International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (UN-INSTRAW).Established in July by a unanimous vote of the General Assembly, the first UN super-agency on female empowerment will oversee all of the world body’s programmes aimed at promoting women’s rights and their full participation in global affairs.Headed by former Chilean president Michele Bachelet, it will help Member States implement standards, provide technical and financial support to countries which request it, and forge partnerships with civil society. Within the UN, it will hold the world body accountable for its own commitments on gender equality. read more

UNbacked polio campaign launches in Central African Republic

27 February 2012A United Nations-backed immunization campaign to eradicate polio among Central African children has been launched as part of urgent efforts to deal with the resurgence of the disease in the impoverished country. A United Nations-backed immunization campaign to eradicate polio among Central African Republic children has been launched as part of urgent efforts to deal with the resurgence of the disease in the impoverished country.Last year, CAR detected four imported cases of polio after two years without registering any cases. As a result, the Government is launching a vaccination campaign that seeks to reach children in hard-to-reach populations as well as those living in conflict and post-conflict zones where there is limited access to health services.According to the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), CAR is particularly vulnerable to the spread of disease, given its numerous borders with countries where the polio virus still circulates. Ongoing violence and insecurity has exacerbated the situation and led to an estimated 171,751 internally displaced persons (IDPs) and returning refugees who lack access to basic medical care. The campaign will have health workers going door to door to deliver polio vaccines, vitamin A supplements and provide de-worming treatment to hundreds of thousands of children between the ages of zero to five years old.“Routine data shows that only 68 per cent of children in CAR under five years of age are completely vaccinated against polio, which means that 260,000 children under five are at risk of contracting the virus,” said Mary Louise Eagleton Meaney, Deputy Representative for UNICEF in the country during the campaign launch ceremony on Friday.During the campaign, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNICEF will both be working to reinforce Government efforts towards immunization activities. WHO will be involved in the training and coordination of the vaccination teams as well as covering operational costs, while UNICEF will provide vitamin A supplements and de-worming tablets, as well as assist with the procurement of polio vaccines. UNICEF will also provide technical assistance in vaccine distribution and engage with young people, women, media, and community, religious and political leaders to increase awareness about the campaign and ensure that parents understand the benefits of immunization. In a news release issued by the agency, UNICEF said the campaign will also serve as part of its child survival and development programme, which aims to use existing low-cost and high-impact interventions to prevent child deaths. Currently, CAR’s mortality rate for children under five is higher than the region’s average. read more

How the Moors murders by Ian Brady and Myra Hindley shocked the

first_img“The grief can never be etched from your mind” – former police officer Norman Brennan, who represented Ian Brady’s victims tells #newsnight pic.twitter.com/tmwc5pllaf— BBC Newsnight (@BBCNewsnight) 15 May 2017 Ian Brady and Myra Hindley Ian Brady and Myra HindleyCredit:Telegraph Archive Brady was 28 in May 1966 when he and Hindley were convicted of murdering Lesley Ann and Edward. He was also convicted of the murder of John Kilbride and received three life sentences to run concurrently. In 1987 Brady finally confessed to the murders of Pauline Reade and Keith Bennett but he was never tried for the crimes. They were taken to bleak Saddleworth Moor where they located the shallow grave dug over 20 years before.Pauline was still wearing her pink and gold party dress and blue coat.Brady had beaten her about the head and cut her throat with such force that her spinal cord was severed.Pathologists said it was impossible to say whether Brady had sexually assaulted her.Four months after Pauline vanished, the day after President John F Kennedy’s assassination in the US, 12-year-old John Kilbride became Brady’s second victim. In the shadow of the presidential assassination little attention was paid to the disappearance of the Manchester boy.John was lured on to the moor where he was sexually assaulted and murdered. John Kilbride, far left, and his younger brothers Keith Bennett, left, whose body has never been found, and Pauline Read Smith was summoned to the house by a phone call on a false pretext. He was then forced to watch as Brady attacked Evans with an axe, smothered him with a cushion and completed his grim task with an electrical cable.Shocked, Smith helped the pair carry the trussed-up body into a bedroom. He then fled terrified and called the police. The next morning police searched the house, and began unravelling the gruesome evidence of Brady and Hindley’s appalling crimes. The sadistic crimes of Ian Brady and Myra Hindley shocked the nation to its core.Across Britain there was an outpouring of loathing for the pair who snatched children off the street, sexually abused them and tortured them to death. The evidence seen and heard at their Chester Assizes trial chilled the hearts of those who sat through it. John Kilbride, far left, and his younger brothersCredit:TERRY KILBRIDE Brady took a photograph of Hindley standing on the edge of his grave holding her pet dog. The photograph would later lead police to the young boy’s resting place. Police search Saddleworth Moor for the victims of Myra Hindley and Ian Brady The body of the third victim, Keith Bennett, 12, has never been found.Keith died after leaving his home in Chorlton-on-Medlock in Manchester on June 16 1964.Police mounted an intensive search of the moor in 1986 amid reports that the pair had confessed to his murder. But even though Brady and Hindley were both permitted to travel to the moor to try to remember where the boy’s remains were, they were not found. It was Brady and Hindley’s next killing that sealed their reputation for pure wickedness – the murder of 10-year-old Lesley Ann Downey on Boxing Day in 1964. She became their youngest victim when she was lured from a fairground to the house Hindley shared with her grandmother in Hattersley. Her last moments were recorded on a harrowing 16-minute, 21-second audio tape. Her cries reduced the judge, jury, courtroom spectators and even hardened police officers to tears.John Stalker, former deputy chief constable of Greater Manchester, who was then a detective sergeant, expressed the feelings of many in the courtroom when he said: “Nothing in criminal behaviour before or since has penetrated my heart with quite the same paralysing intensity.”Detectives could not say exactly how Lesley Ann died. Her body was dug up naked except for shoes and socks.Had the pair not made a crucial blunder in involving Hindley’s brother-in-law David Smith in their next enterprise, the murder of Edward Evans, 17, might not have been their last. Hightech camouflage protects from 1000degree heat

first_imgSlapping paint on your face isn’t just for college sports fans anymore. It can also protect your skin from explosions and heat of up to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. That may not be a concern to the average person, but this new military technology could be very useful for soldiers who have to deal with the threat of roadside bombs and other explosives on a daily basis.University of Southern Mississippi professor Robert Lochhead joined a team of chemists to create camouflage paint that reflects heat, which is not an easy task considering that most face paints do exactly the opposite. Paints made with mineral oil or hydrocarbon substances actually absorb heat and can burn skin if exposed to extreme temperatures.Lochhead and his team used silicone as the base for the paint. The problem is that makes the entire compound less flexible, and they still needed to follow military standards. Among the challenges was the requirement that 30% of the paint contained DEET, an industrial-grade insect repellent. In addition, it had to be easy to put on and remove, and it was essential that it didn’t cause any irritation to the nose, eyes, or mouth. “We didn’t think we could do it,” Lochhead said. However, after a lot of trial and error, the team created a substance that meets all military standards and can successfully repel heat. According to preliminary tests, it can protect human skin from explosive temperatures for up to a minute, which would provide enough time for a soldier to run to safety after a nearby blast. In addition to soldiers, this technology could also be an obvious help to firefighters. Lochhead said that is the next goal — he is working on a colorless version of the same substance that would still provide skin protection.Read ACS’s release herelast_img read more

Google Maps adds detailed North Korea info

first_imgGoogle this week rolled out the most expansive update yet to the depiction of North Korea on Google Maps. As the culmination of years of crowdsourced images and information, the nation that once looked like a vast areas of nothingness is now populated with information on landmarks, highways, universities, public transportation routes, and even alleged prison work camps. This all came together as part of Google’s Map Maker initiative, a separate project from Google Maps which approaches global cartography with more of a Wikipedia-esque style. Individual users can submit information into Google’s Map Maker, and it doesn’t necessarily need to be screened or validated before it is published. The Google Maps website, though, needs to be as accurate as possible. As such, even though Map Maker has been filling up with details on the geography of North Korea, Google was skittish about pushing any of that data to its official mapping platform. It took about three years, but Google finally decided the user-submitted information on the reclusive Asian nation was valid enough.Ironically, this update provides users from all around the world with more detailed information about North Korea than many North Korean residents. The country is notorious for blocking Internet access to all but a select few of its citizens. In fact, Google CEO Eric Schmidt recently took a highly publicized trip to the region to encourage government officials to open up the Internet to more people. Google said that Schmidt’s visit did not have anything to do with the recent update to Google Maps.Google isn’t the only one trying to provide a detailed digital look into exactly what is located inside North Korea. 38 North, for example, has a very exhaustive look at things like satellite imagery and cultivated information from users who have insights into the blocked-off nation.Google Maps, though, has a much wider reach, and given that it used to depict North Korea as little more than a large blank canvas, this update is quite noteworthy.last_img read more

Scooternado Miami orders electric scooters off streets before Hurricane Dorian

Wait — no, I’m not. As much as I respect the original intent of the holiday (which became official back in 1894), to most of us, it’s just a bonus day off — one that’s blissfully tacked onto a weekend. So, yeah, stores; go ahead, run your sales. I’m listening. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Labor Day doesn’t bring out bargains to compete with the likes of Black Friday (which will be here before you know it), but there are definitely some sales worth your time. For example:We’ve rounded up the best Labor Day mattress deals. We’ve also gathered the best Labor Day laptop deals at Best Buy.Be sure to check out Amazon’s roughly three dozen Labor Day deals on TVs and audio. Google Express is having a big sale as well, one that includes deals on game consoles, AirPods, iPhones, laptops and more.Below I’ve rounded up a handful of individual items I consider to be the cream of the crop, followed by a handy reference guide to other Labor Day sales. Keep in mind, of course, that products may sell out at any time, even if the sale itself is still running. Top House Dems raise prospect of impeachment jail for Trump

first_imgDonald Trump. File PhotoTop House Democrats have raised the prospect of impeachment or the real possibility of prison time for president Donald Trump if it’s proved that he directed illegal hush-money payments to women, adding to the legal pressure on the president over the Russia investigation and other scandals.”There’s a very real prospect that on the day Donald Trump leaves office, the Justice Department may indict him, that he may be the first president in quite some time to face the real prospect of jail time,” said Rep. Adam Schiff, the incoming chairman of the House intelligence committee. “The bigger pardon question may come down the road as the next president has to determine whether to pardon Donald Trump.”Rep. Jerry Nadler, the incoming chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, described the details in prosecutors’ filings Friday in the case of Trump’s former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, as evidence that Trump was “at the center of a massive fraud.””They would be impeachable offenses,” Nadler said.In the filings, prosecutors in New York for the first time link Trump to a federal crime of illegal payments to buy the silence of two women during the 2016 campaign. Special counsel Robert Mueller’s office also laid out previously undisclosed contacts between Trump associates and Russian intermediaries and suggested the Kremlin aimed early on to influence Trump and his Republican campaign by playing to both his political and personal business interests.Trump has denied wrongdoing and has compared the investigations to a “witch hunt.”Nadler, D-N.Y., said it was too early to say whether Congress would pursue impeachment proceedings based on the illegal payments alone because lawmakers would need to weigh the gravity of the offense to justify “overturning” the 2016 election. Nadler and other lawmakers said Sunday they would await additional details from Mueller’s investigation into Russian election interference and possible coordination with the Trump campaign to determine the extent of Trump’s misconduct.Regarding the illegal payments, “whether they are important enough to justify an impeachment is a different question, but certainly they’d be impeachable offenses because even though they were committed before the president became president, they were committed in the service of fraudulently obtaining the office,” Nadler said.Mueller has not said when he will complete a report of any findings, and it isn’t clear that any such report would be made available to Congress. That would be up to the attorney general. Trump on Friday said he would nominate former Attorney General William Barr to the post to succeed Jeff Sessions.Nadler indicated that Democrats, who will control the House in January, will step up their own investigations. He said Congress, the Justice Department and the special counsel need to dig deeper into the allegations, which include questions about whether Trump lied about his business arrangements with Russians and about possible obstruction of justice.”The new Congress will not try to shield the president,” he said. “We will try to get to the bottom of this, in order to serve the American people and to stop this massive conspiracy – this massive fraud on the American people.”Schiff, D-Calif., also stressed a need to wait “until we see the full picture.” He has previously indicated his panel would seek to look into the Trump family’s business ties with Russia.”I think we also need to see this as a part of a broader pattern of potential misconduct by the president, and it’s that broad pattern, I think, that will lead us to a conclusion about whether it rises to the level to warrant removal from office,” Schiff said.In the legal filings, the Justice Department stopped short of accusing Trump of directly committing a crime. But it said Trump told Cohen to make illegal payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal, both of whom claimed to have had affairs with Trump more than a decade ago.In separate filings, Mueller’s team detail how Cohen spoke to a Russian who “claimed to be a ‘trusted person’ in the Russian Federation who could offer the campaign ‘political synergy’ and ‘synergy on a government level.'” Cohen said he never followed up on that meeting. Mueller’s team also said former campaign chairman Paul Manafort lied to them about his contacts with a Russian associate and Trump administration officials, including in 2018.Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida called the latest filings “relevant” in judging Trump’s fitness for office but said lawmakers need more information to render judgment. He also warned the White House about considering a pardon for Manafort, saying such a step could trigger congressional debate about limiting a president’s pardon powers.Such a move would be “a terrible mistake,” Rubio said. “Pardons should be used judiciously. They’re used for cases with extraordinary circumstances.”Sen. Angus King, an independent from Maine and a member of the Senate intelligence committee, cautioned against a rush to impeachment, which he said citizens could interpret as “political revenge and a coup against the president.””The best way to solve a problem like this, to me, is elections,” King said. “I’m a conservative when it comes to impeachment. I think it’s a last resort and only when the evidence is clear of a really substantial legal violation. We may get there, but we’re not there now.”Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut urged Mueller to “show his cards soon” so that Congress can make a determination early next year on whether to act on impeachment.”Let’s be clear: We have reached a new level in the investigation,” Murphy said. “It’s important for Congress to get all of the underlying facts and data and evidence that the special counsel has.”Nadler spoke on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday, Rubio was on CNN and ABC’s “This Week,” and Schiff appeared on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” Murphy spoke on ABC, and King was on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”last_img read more
